Hi Mike

Thanks for the kind words. As you know, there's no big secret to the dry-and-dropper technique. I have simply succumbed to the dark side, thrown my fishing inhibitions out the window and stuck on a great dirty nymph.

I have to agree that it can be ungainly to cast, but if you can get a half-decent presentation and a drag free drift it will bring up trout that might otherwise ignore a single dry.

It's all a matter of personal choice. I was in a situation last weekend with a pod of rising fish in shallow, weedy water. Nothing for it but a single dry - and it felt great! As much as I enjoy catching fish on nymphs, nothing can beat the delicacy and simplicity of the single dry.

I'm away to tie up some leaded pheasant tails!

Simon,
really great to hear from you. I was thinking about you just today whilst out fishing one of our old spots. Old email works fine. Will send you a message too when I get your address.

Go catch a carp!

Greetings Mike, kind words but I am more inclined to think that the amount of times you and your bro' had gone through the run (that must not be named) had stimulated a "hatch" and I was just the lucky recipient of you getting a fish on the fin.

I'll drop you an email about what is happening out here at Penn State. Spring Creek, Penns Creek, Fishing Creek and of course the little Juniata. the Sulphurs are coming!!!!! Not to mention the major event in less than a month when big carp will be (note the confident assertion) caught on a dry fly. Same email still work for you?

Out here, the dry and dropper is a staple, and I even resort to it when I can't buy a bit on top.

My chief complaints are that makes casting at small targets -- under overhanging branches and elephant ear plants -- impossible, and that you need a good 18" between the two hooks or you inevitably foul-hook an unhappily large percentage of the fish you catch.

It's that distance that gives me pause; I always tie on the nymph as an insurance policy, but because I'm always casting the dry a good 18" short of my target, I discover I'm fishing a nymph with a dry fly attached an unhappy length up the line...

Keep up the good work!
