The Arete 45 is a cracking rucksac made by Bergaus. Although it seems to be marketed towards the climbing community, I like it because it’s very simple, yet oddly good. It’s also cheap, bulletproof and has a decent length back for tall sods like myself.
It has lots of, eh, ‘bits’ on the back designed for attaching climbing gear, but which I find excellent for stringing to all manner of fishing paraphernalia. I think as a purely loch fishing day pack, the 35 litre version might be better. But for an overnight stay, the 45 is excellent. I convinced a good pal of mine to buy this bag, and he also likes it a lot. His has orange bits though, which is unfair.
This bag also comes highly recommended for winter hillwalking when one needs to carry a few extras like crampons and warm clothes. Again, it could be argued thay the 35 litre version is more sensible if you’re not carrying ropes, but I personally like the versatility of the larger pack. Besides, they come with compression straps so it’s easy enough to tighten them up.
Buy one online (don’t pay more than £45), or instore at Tiso like I did.
