Wool is a olden-day material that is vastly underrated in these more modern times. In particular, merino wool from New Zealand is superb stuff, particularly for socks and undergarments. My very favourite socks are made by Smartwool. Their ‘Mountaineer’ socks are simply brilliant for winter walking and cold wading in spring, and the slightly thinner ‘Hiker’ socks are great for general…eh, hiking. They’re so sooooft and comfortable. They also seem to breath remarkably well, even inside my muckle winter boots. To be honest, I sometimes still get cold feet in winter whilst grayling fishing, but that’s probably because my wader socks are too thin and my circulation is useless.
Wool socks like these will provide many days of (relatively) stink-free use, so they’re perfect for long tramps across the country, or multi-day fishing campaigns. I love these socks, they really do come highly recommended.
